Solaires is now Carbon Neutral!

Solaires Team | Victoria, B.C. | SEPTEMBER 2022

As the widespread effects of climate change continue to grow more apparent, so too has the urgency of meeting national net zero emissions commitments. In 2021, the Canadian Net-Zero Emissions Accountability Act became law, thereby enshrining in legislation Canada’s commitment to achieve net-zero emissions by 2050 (Government of Canada, 2022). In support of this transition to a cleaner, prosperous economy, Canadian corporations of all sizes have an essential role to play.

Solaires is on a mission to revolutionise the solar industry with our innovative perovskite photovoltaic technology . Although Solaires’ business model inherently seeks to create positive impacts for both people and the planet, we too have a responsibility to ensure that our operations and activities in achieving this mission are done sustainably. In 2021, we partnered with Synergy Enterprises, a Victoria based environmental consulting firm to support our first company carbon footprint assessment and our journey in becoming carbon neutral.

Starting with the 2021 fiscal year, Solaires’ carbon footprint was 20 tonnes of CO2e. Our top three emission sources were company travel, followed by work-from-home emissions and staff commuting. Although our footprint is very small, we are committed to keeping it that way as we scale and grow as a company.

To reduce our carbon footprint, we have been working with Ostrom Climate, one of North America’s leading providers of carbon management solutions. We invested in their Climate Action portfolio containing a mix of high-quality offsets tailored to best-in-class standards from Canada, and around the world. We are excited to announce that we have officially become a carbon neutral company as of August 2022! Taking a proactive approach to managing our environmental footprint in the early stages of our development ensures that we stay true to our mission and minimize our footprint as much as possible. We also hope to inspire other small businesses to consider their emission sources and do their part in working towards a net zero future for everyone.
